New on HBO Max This Week: Top Movies & Series (Oct 26–Nov 1, 2026)
October 28, 2026 — 65Nation
HBO Max has a quiet start to the week of October 26 to November 1, 2026, then a big batch of movies and the return of The Gilded Age on November 1. For readers 65 and older, this is a great week for classics: James Stewart, Judy Garland and John Wayne all arrive at once. Here’s what’s worth your time.
Highlights for the Week
What’s the biggest new arrival on HBO Max this week?
The Gilded Age Season 4 premieres November 1. If you loved Downton Abbey, this is the series for you, and Christine Baranski is as sharp as ever.
Which classic movie should I watch first?
The Shop Around the Corner with James Stewart. It’s a warm, funny Christmas romance, and it inspired You’ve Got Mail many years later.
Is there anything I should skip?
Cannibal Poet, a true-crime docuseries arriving October 29, is very dark and graphic. Most readers will want to pass on it.
Top New Movies on HBO Max This Week
Nov 1 – Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
Vincente Minnelli’s Technicolor musical follows one St. Louis family through the year before the 1904 World’s Fair. Judy Garland stars, with a young Margaret O’Brien nearly stealing the picture.
This is the film that gave us “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Trolley Song.” It’s family-friendly from start to finish and a lovely one to share with grandchildren.
Nov 1 – The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017)
In 1843, a broke Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) races to write A Christmas Carol in six weeks, while his characters, Scrooge included, start talking back to him. Christopher Plummer plays Scrooge, and Jonathan Pryce plays Dickens’s father.
It’s a clever, warm holiday film for anyone who loves the book. Rated PG, with a few mildly spooky moments.
Nov 1 – The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
Two clerks in a Budapest gift shop can’t stand each other, not knowing they’ve been falling in love through anonymous letters. James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan star, and Ernst Lubitsch directs.
It’s gentle, funny and set at Christmastime, with nothing to worry about content-wise. If you’ve only seen You’ve Got Mail, this is the original, and I think it’s the better film.
Nov 1 – They Were Expendable (1945)
John Ford’s World War II drama follows a PT boat squadron in the Philippines during the hard retreat of 1941 and 1942. Robert Montgomery and John Wayne lead, with Donna Reed as a nurse.
Ford made it right after serving in the Navy himself, and it feels honest rather than flashy. The combat is restrained for its era, with no gore, and veterans in the family may especially appreciate it.
Top New TV Series on HBO Max This Week
Nov 1 – The Gilded Age (2022)
Season 4 of Julian Fellowes’s period drama returns to 1880s New York, where old money and new money keep fighting over who belongs. Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon and Louisa Jacobson are back.
This is the best fit of the week for our readers: gorgeous costumes, sharp dialogue and very little to make you wince. Think of it as Downton Abbey on Fifth Avenue.
Nov 1 – The Kitchen (2014)
Season 41 of Food Network’s cooking talk show arrives. Jeff Mauro, Katie Lee Biegel, Sunny Anderson and Geoffrey Zakarian trade recipes, kitchen tips and plenty of friendly teasing.
It’s light, cheerful TV, and you’ll probably come away with a new idea for Sunday dinner. Nothing to worry about here.
