NOSTALGIA

Remember blasts from the past.

If you loved the original The Devil Wears Prada back in 2006, here is something that will make you smile. Anne Hathaway sat down on Good Morning America and gave fans a peek behind the curtain of the long-awaited sequel.

Turns out, working with Meryl Streep the second time around was a very different experience.

Why Meryl Kept Her Distance the First Time

When they filmed the original movie, Streep made a deliberate choice. She pulled back from the social side of the set to stay in character as the cold, intimidating Miranda Priestly.

“Meryl loves the hang,” Hathaway explained, “but she decided that she should kind of withdraw from the social aspect of making the film so that way we would really spend time with Miranda.”

In other words, the chill you felt from Miranda Priestly on screen? That was intentional. Streep was protecting the performance by keeping everyone at arm’s length.

This Time, the Vibes Were Completely Different

For the sequel, Streep let her guard down. And Hathaway was thrilled.

“On this one, what was so great was that I finally got to work with Meryl Streep,” Hathaway said. “She was herself, the hang was impeccable, the vibes were great.”

Still, even after 20 years in Hollywood, Hathaway admitted she had to fight the urge to completely fangirl over her co-star. “You just go ‘Oh my God, I love you,’ and you have to do that,” she said, “but what I learned in 20 years is that you zip that up and you don’t show that.”

The Music That Brought Andy Sachs Back to Life

Getting back into character as Andy Sachs after nearly two decades away was not instant. For Hathaway, the key was the music from the first film, including Madonna’s “Vogue” and Alanis Morissette’s “Crazy.”

“I just listened to the music from the first one and all of the memories came back of who I was when I was 22, and how scared I was making the movie,” she said.

There is something most of us can relate to in that. A familiar song lands, and suddenly you are right back where you were, feelings and all.

Who’s New and Who’s Back

The sequel brings back Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt in their original roles. Bridgerton star Simone Ashley joins the cast as Priestley’s assistant, and Patrick Brammall plays a new love interest for Andy Sachs. Adrian Grenier, who played her boyfriend in the first film, will not be returning.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 opens May 1. Premieres have already taken place in New York, London, and Seoul, so yes, the excitement is very real.
