The Best Books to Read Aloud With Your Grandkids

There is something about settling into a chair together, book in hand, that no screen can quite match. When a grandchild comes for an afternoon visit, the right book can turn an ordinary hour into something both of you carry for a long time.

Finding that right book takes a little thought. The child’s age matters. So does attention span. And so does how much time you have together. For instance, some toddlers like the pictures more than the story itself, while others are not interested in the pictures and just want to hear how the story unfolds. That is why it is important to know what your grandkids like. Since toddlers change interests so quickly as they grow up, it probably is the safest idea to ask their parents what they currently like before picking a book for them.

Short picture books work beautifully for younger children or quick visits. Stories built around family relationships tend to land especially well; they feel familiar to grandchildren and give you both something to talk about afterward.

For longer visits, or for grandchildren who are ready for something with more story to it, chapter books open up a whole other world. You can read a chapter or two each time the child visits, building a shared story over days or weeks. That kind of anticipation is its own gift. This also creates another bond between you and your grandkids, since you are sharing a new and exciting adventure.

One type of story that works especially well for read-alouds follows a young girl through an overnight visit with her grandparents. Meals, games, familiar household routines… the kind of everyday moments that feel true to life. Children recognize themselves in stories like that, and they often prompt the best conversations.

The right book does not have to be complicated. It just has to fit the child in front of you and the afternoon you have together. That combination, chosen with a little care, is more than enough.
