Sep 21 – Wicked (2024)

This lavish screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, following the friendship between green-skinned Elphaba and the popular Glinda. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star, with Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard.

The songs, costumes, and sets are spectacular, and the story of friendship and standing up for yourself has real heart. It is rated PG and suitable for the whole family, though at more than two and a half hours it makes for a proper sit-down event.

Sep 24 – The Last Whale Singer (2026)

This animated family adventure follows a young whale who discovers he carries an ancient gift of song and must find the courage to protect his ocean home. It comes with lush undersea animation and a gentle, hopeful spirit.

It is a good-hearted film with a message about courage and nature that younger children will enjoy. A lovely pick for a visit with the grandchildren, with nothing in it to give anyone pause.

Sep 27 – A Complete Unknown (2024)

Timothee Chalamet stars as a young Bob Dylan in this biographical drama, tracing his arrival in early 1960s New York and the uproar that followed when he plugged in an electric guitar. Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro co-star.

For anyone who came of age with this music, the film is a rich trip back to the Greenwich Village folk years, and Chalamet does his own singing. There is some mild language, but it is a warm, absorbing watch that respects the era.

Sep 24 – American Horror Story: 13 (2011)

The FX anthology series returns for a thirteenth season, once again assembling a familiar ensemble that includes Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters for a fresh, self-contained horror story. Each season tells a new tale.

This is a marquee premiere, but it comes with a firm heads-up. The series is known for graphic violence, disturbing images, and adult themes, so it is strictly for those who like being scared and not for sensitive viewers.

Sep 24 – Pawn Stars (2009)

The Las Vegas pawn shop is open for business again as the Harrison family appraises everything from Civil War relics to vintage cars, haggling with customers and calling in experts along the way. Season 24 brings more of the same easygoing routine.

This is comfortable, informative television, and the history behind the odd items that come through the door is often fascinating. It is completely family-friendly and easy to dip into for an episode or two.

Sep 26 – Expedition X (2020)

This Discovery adventure series follows a team as they investigate unexplained mysteries and legends around the world, from remote ruins to reported monsters. New seasons join Hulu this week.

It is light, curious fun with a sense of adventure, and the far-flung locations are a treat. There are a few spooky moments, but nothing that should trouble most viewers.
