New on HBO Max This Week: Top Movies & Series (Aug 24–30, 2026)
August 28, 2026 — 65Nation

Here is what is new on HBO Max in the United States for the week of August 24 through August 30, 2026, picked with viewers 65 and older in mind. The series side has some genuinely comfortable choices this week, while the new movies lean heavily toward horror, so we will be straight with you about what suits this audience and what does not.
Highlights for the Week
What is the most comfortable watch this week?
Two easy winners on the series side. Bobby’s Triple Threat brings Bobby Flay back for a friendly cooking competition, and House Hunters returns with a fresh batch of episodes. Both are the kind of low-stress television you can enjoy any time of day.
Is there something with a bit more substance?
Yes. The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper is a thoughtful documentary series that digs into one big subject each episode. For scripted drama, The Producer is a new HBO Original worth a look.
What about the new movies?
Fair warning here: this week’s film additions are almost all horror, including the Strangers titles and a Keanu Reeves thriller. They are well made, but they are intense and not for everyone, so we have flagged them clearly below.
Top New Movies on HBO Max This Week
Aug 30 – Knock Knock (2015)
Keanu Reeves plays a devoted husband and father whose evening alone turns into a nightmare when two young women knock on his door. Director Eli Roth turns a simple setup into a tense thriller.
The pull here is Keanu Reeves, and the film keeps you on edge. Be aware it has adult content and a fair amount of menace, so it is an evening watch for those who enjoy a nerve-jangling story.
Aug 30 – The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024)
A young couple’s car breaks down in a remote town, and their overnight stay turns terrifying when three masked strangers begin stalking the house. It is the first chapter of a rebooted horror series.
This is straight-ahead scary, with home-invasion tension from start to finish. It is effective at what it does, but it is frightening and violent, so we would only recommend it to committed horror viewers.
Top New Series on HBO Max This Week
Aug 25 – The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper (2023)
Anderson Cooper anchors this CNN documentary series, giving a full hour to one important story at a time, from headline events to human interest pieces.
If you like to come away from an evening feeling informed, this is a solid, level-headed choice. Cooper is a familiar and steady guide, and the single-topic format makes each episode easy to follow.
Aug 26 – Bobby’s Triple Threat (2022)
Bobby Flay returns for a fifth season of his cooking competition, in which up-and-coming chefs take on his hand-picked culinary “Titans” for a cash prize.
This is warm, fun, and full of good food, exactly the sort of show that goes down easy on a weeknight. No cliffhangers, no stress, just talented cooks and a host you already know.
Aug 28 – House Hunters (1999)
The long-running HGTV favorite is back with a new volume of episodes, following buyers as they tour three homes and decide which one to make their own.
It is comfort television at its finest, familiar and gentle, and easy to dip in and out of. A brand-new batch means plenty of house tours to enjoy without a worry in sight.
Aug 28 – The Producer (2026)
This new HBO Original drama goes behind the scenes of show business, following an ambitious producer navigating the pressures of the industry.
