Veterinarians say it is not your imagination. Many dogs really do pick a favorite person and the choice usually comes down to who is most consistently meeting their needs. The one doing the feeding, the walking, the training, and the cozy couch time tends to win the top spot.
But it is a little more involved than just who holds the leash. Breed plays a role, too. Some dogs are wired to bond deeply with one person. Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, and German Shepherds tend to fall into that camp. Other breeds spread their affection more evenly across the whole household.

Vet Dr. Page Mader points to everyday life changes like a family member leaving for college, a job change, a new person stepping in for the morning routine, as things that can all move the needle. Dogs live very much in the present, she says, so whoever is showing up consistently right now tends to be the one they are most bonded to.
If you want to become the favorite, Dr. Mader’s advice is simple. Put down the phone on walks. Stay consistent with your routines. And pay attention to what your dog actually loves most.
Some dogs light up for a game of fetch. Others want puzzle toys or a long belly rub. Speak their particular language, and that devoted gaze just might land on you.
