You scrubbed the bathroom, mopped the floors, and tackled the kitchen cabinets. Now your lower back is screaming. Sound familiar?
According to Dr. Amy Konvalin, this is very common. Housework involves a lot of bending, twisting, reaching, and lifting. That combination can be rough on your lower back, especially if your body is not used to that kind of effort.
It tends to hit hardest after a big “deep clean”, the kind that goes well beyond your usual routine. Your back simply is not conditioned for that level of activity all at once.
The Fix: Spread It Out
Dr. Konvalin told 10Almonds the key is building endurance gradually. That means reducing the stress on your lower back at any one time, allowing your body to recover, and slowly increasing what you do over time.
In practice, that means breaking up your cleaning into smaller chunks across the week instead of doing it all in one long session. A little each day is much easier on your back than one marathon cleaning day.
Dr. Konvalin also makes an important point: recurring pain or tension during housework should not be ignored. Pushing through the pain repeatedly is not the answer. She recommends addressing the problem early, before it becomes a bigger issue.
Simple Habits That Help
A few straightforward habits can make a real difference:
- Take breaks when it feels sensible and if you are not sure, it is sensible to take one
- When you return to a task after a break, ease back into it rather than picking up at full speed
- Spread heavier chores across several days so no single day is too demanding
The goal is to keep moving and keep your home clean, without paying for it the next morning.
