PAWS & PURPOSE

Celebrating the bond between people and their pets.

You know your dog better than anyone. You notice the little things. The way they used to bound off the couch, and now they take a moment first. The walk they used to trot through without a second thought, and now they are ready to head home halfway in.

It is easy to tell yourself it is just a bad day. But these small shifts are worth paying attention to.

When Does Aging Usually Begin?

Dogs can start showing signs of aging as early as age 7. That is earlier than most of us expect. And while slowing down is a natural part of getting older, some changes can signal that your dog needs a little extra support.

What to Watch For

These are some of the most common signs that a dog is starting to feel their age:

  • Moving more slowly or stiffly, especially after resting or first thing in the morning
  • Tiring out faster on walks they used to handle easily
  • Sleeping more than usual during the day
  • Seeming confused or disoriented, like getting stuck in corners or forgetting familiar routines
  • Changes in personality, such as becoming more anxious, clingy, or withdrawn
  • Restless sleep or nighttime pacing, which can point to discomfort or cognitive changes
  • Less interest in play or activities they used to love

The tricky part is that these changes tend to creep in gradually. One quiet week can blend into another, and before long a pattern has formed that you did not quite notice forming.

Could It Be More Than Just Age?

By the time dogs are between 8 and 10 years old, many begin experiencing cognitive decline similar to dementia in humans. This can show up as confusion, disorientation, or restless nights. Because it comes on slowly, it is easy to miss until the signs are harder to ignore.

If you are noticing a few of these things at once, it is worth a conversation with your vet. Catching changes early gives you a much better chance of keeping your dog comfortable and happy for longer.

Your old friend has been there through a lot of mornings with you. Paying a little closer attention right now is one of the best things you can do for them.
