Every year, one girl’s name and one boy’s name rise to the top of the charts. Some names hold the crown for a single year. Others stay there for an entire decade. A few names even disappear for a generation, then come roaring back.
For our generation, the names tell a real story. James and Linda led the way as the 1950s opened. Mary took over for girls and held on through most of the decade. Michael became the boy’s name of our era; he showed up at the top of the list year after year, from the mid-1950s all the way through the 1990s and beyond.
Then came the Jennifers. Starting in 1970, Jennifer dominated the girls’ list for fifteen straight years. If your kids grew up in the ’70s or early ’80s, you almost certainly knew a Jennifer, or two or three.
Jessica and Ashley had their moments in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Then Emily took the baton and ran with it from 1996 all the way through 2007. Jacob held the boys’ top spot from 1999 onward, finally ending Michael’s long reign.
