For a lot of us, Pierce Brosnan is James Bond. He held the role from 1995 to 2002 and brought a charm to 007 that felt like it was made for the big screen. Now a new actor is about to step into those shoes, and Brosnan has some thoughts on who it should be.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Brosnan said he’s cheering for actor Callum Turner to land the part. The two worked together in the 2017 film The Only Living Boy in New York, and Brosnan clearly came away impressed.
“Callum Turner is someone I’ve worked with, and he’s so strong. They all have a voice and a physique, and a presence on film. They all have longevity as actors, all of these young men.”
Turner is one of several names circulating in the casting rumors. Others reportedly in the mix include Jack Lowden from the TV series Slow Horses, along with Josh O’Connor and Jacob Elordi.
The new Bond film will reboot the series following 2021’s No Time to Die. Director Denis Villeneuve, best known for the Dune films, is at the helm. Brosnan had nothing but praise for that choice.
“ is such an iconoclastic director. His work is visionary, and his stealth and imagination of camera work and storytelling is so visceral and sensuous. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be truly magnificent.”
As for the lucky actor who wins the role? Brosnan had some gracious words from someone who knows exactly what the job demands.
“Whoever plays the role, I wish him the very best of life and strength and courage.”
Brosnan added that he’s now just an eager fan waiting for the announcement like the rest of us. “I eagerly await to hear the news and the celebration of the next James Bond,” he said. “I think we are going to be blown away. I really do.”
Honestly? With a director like Villeneuve and a former Bond this excited about the future, that sounds about right.
