Sep 7 – Poor Things (2023)

Emma Stone won an Oscar for this wildly imaginative story of a woman brought back to life who sets off to see the world on her own terms. Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe co-star.

It is a dazzling, one of a kind film that critics adored. A firm heads-up, though: it has a great deal of nudity and explicit sexual content, so it is best watched on your own rather than with the family.

Sep 8 – The Green Knight (2021)

Dev Patel stars in this handsome retelling of the medieval tale of Sir Gawain, who sets out on a perilous quest to face a mysterious green giant. It is moody and beautifully filmed.

This is a thoughtful, artful adventure for patient viewers who like a story steeped in legend. It moves slowly and turns a little strange, with some eerie imagery, but nothing too harsh.

Sep 9 – Together Together (2021)

Ed Helms plays a single man in his forties who hires a young surrogate, played by Patti Harrison, to carry his child, and an unexpected friendship grows between them. It is quiet and kind.

This is the gentle watch of the week, funny in a soft way and genuinely touching. There is nothing racy here, just a warm story about connection and starting over later in life.

Sep 12 – Suzume (2022)

From the acclaimed Japanese director Makoto Shinkai, this animated adventure follows a teenage girl on a journey across Japan to close mysterious doors that unleash disaster. The artwork is gorgeous.

It is a lovely film to share with grandchildren who are a little older, full of beautiful scenery and real feeling. A couple of moments touch on loss and natural disaster, so it carries some weight.

Sep 8 – Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2026)

Mariska Hargitay returns as Captain Olivia Benson in a new season of the long running crime drama, as the detectives work difficult cases across New York City. You know the rhythm by now.

For the many older viewers who never miss it, this is dependable, familiar television. The cases can be grim by nature, but the show has been a comfortable habit for good reason.

Sep 8 – The Drop: A Snowfall Saga (2026)

This new FX drama returns to the world of the acclaimed series Snowfall, following ambition and danger in the Los Angeles music scene of the 1990s. It is stylish and full of tension.

Fans of gritty crime sagas will want to tune in. Be aware it is a mature show with violence, drugs, and strong language, so it is firmly grownup viewing.
