You glance at the clock. It reads 11:11. Something in you says, make a wish. You might not even know why, but it just feels like the right thing to do.
You are far from alone in that. Millions of people share that exact instinct. And it turns out, there is a whole history behind it.
Where the Idea of Angel Numbers Comes From
The phrase “angel numbers” refers to number sequences (often repeating digits like 222 or 444) that some people believe carry spiritual meaning. The idea that numbers can hold special significance is ancient. Numerology dates back at least to the 6th century BCE, rooted in the work of the Greek mathematician Pythagoras, whose teachings helped establish one of the first known belief systems built around the symbolism of numbers.
The specific term “angel numbers” is far newer. It was coined in the early 2000s by a former New Age writer named Doreen Virtue. Virtue has since converted to Christianity and stepped away from the concept she created. Even so, the phrase took on a life of its own and has attracted a large following, especially online.
Metaphysical practitioner Aliza Kelly, writing in Allure, describes angel numbers this way:
“It is believed that these numbers are messages from the spiritual universe that offer insight, wisdom, and directionality. Whether you assign them to angels, guides, ancestors, spirits, or simply a higher state of your own consciousness, angel numbers can confirm you’re on the right path, shed invaluable insight on a complicated situation, or even illuminate the powerful, mystical meaning behind recurring themes you experience throughout your life.”
What 1111 Is Said to Mean
Of all the angel numbers out there, 1111 may be the most talked about. Different interpretations exist, but the most common theme is new beginnings; potential, possibility, and the start of something fresh. The number one has always stood for beginnings, so seeing it four times in a row is, for many, a strong emphasis on that idea.
Some interpretations suggest that 1111 signals that you are protected, aligned, and on the right path. Others connect it to union with something greater, the energy of starting anew, and a link to the sun. According to the website Gaia, seeing 1111 or 11:11 is considered a powerful sign of moving toward higher spiritual growth and a signal that now might be the right moment to focus on what you truly want.
Across the board, 1111 is generally seen as a positive sign, especially when it comes to love, money, and career. The feeling is that things are unfolding as they should.
So, Why Do We Wish on 11:11?
The wishing ritual is tied directly to that idea of manifestation, the belief that focusing your thoughts on something you want helps bring it into being. The exact origins of the 11:11 wish are unknown, but the practice received a significant boost from a woman named Solara Antara Amaa-Ra.
In 1986, she founded a New Age group called Star-Borne Unlimited, built around the number 11:11. In her book 11:11: Inside the Doorway, she described 11:11 as a “wake-up call”, a signal, she wrote, that “our time of completion is near.”

In the 1990s, illusionist Uri Geller also played a role. He emphasized the number’s energetic power and still encourages his followers today to make specific wishes when the clock hits 11:11.
Some devoted 11:11 believers take it even further. They hold that the 60 seconds between 11:11 and 11:12 are an especially powerful window for manifestation and that any thought you hold during that minute may be strongly amplified. So they stay focused, and they keep it positive.
Whether you think there is something to it or not, there is something quietly lovely about a ritual that asks you to pause for one minute, think about what you hope for, and believe it is possible. Next time the clock shows 11:11, you know exactly what to do.
