A grandchild is on the way. You are thrilled. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a small voice asks: Am I ready for this?
That question is worth listening to. Being a grandparent today is different from being a parent a few decades ago. Practices have changed. So have expectations. And the relationship between grandparents and new parents can use a little tending, especially in those early months.
The good news is that there are real classes designed exactly for this moment and more of them than most people know about.
What a Grandparenting Class Actually Covers
A grandparenting class is a course, virtual or in person, that gives you current, practical information to help you succeed in your new role. Topics can include modern childbirth practices, updated infant care, safe sleep, health and safety basics, and how to communicate well with your grandchild’s parents.
Some classes are live workshops you attend at a set time. Others are self-paced courses you work through on your own schedule. A few are in person at hospitals or community centers near you.

Why Bother Taking One?
Three reasons stand out. First, staying informed about how your grandchild’s parents are doing things helps everyone feel more comfortable and shows the new parents that you respect their choices.
Second, it builds trust. Walking in prepared signals that you take this role seriously. That matters a great deal to new moms and dads who are already feeling a little overwhelmed.
Third, it gives you confidence. Meeting your grandchild for the first time should feel joyful, not uncertain. A class can help you feel ready.
Your Options, Broken Down
Classes fall into three main formats: local in-person programs, live virtual workshops, and self-paced online courses. Here is what is available in each category.
Local Classes Near You
Start with a quick search for grandparent classes in your area. Hospitals, libraries, community centers, and local birthing professionals often offer workshops. These are a good fit if you prefer learning in person or want to meet other grandparents going through the same experience.
First Aid Training
The American Red Cross offers first-aid training specifically for grandparents. It covers common medical issues, warning signs, and what to do in an emergency. Both in-person and online options are available.
Live Virtual Workshops
These are one-time online classes held at a scheduled time. When you register, pick a session that works for your calendar, and your partner’s, if they are joining you.
- Mayo Clinic — Held once a month, this two-and-a-half-hour live workshop covers modern childbirth, updated infant care practices, and ways to support new parents. One registration covers one set of grandparents. It is open to grandparents of babies up to about four months old.
- Stanford Medicine — Grandparenting Today meets once or twice a month and covers your role as a grandparent, updated obstetrical and pediatric practices, and how to support your children as they step into parenthood.
- The Womb Room — This two-hour workshop runs every other month. One registration covers one set of grandparents-to-be, and the expectant parents are welcome to attend alongside you. It covers changes in baby care, health and safety, and safe sleep. They recommend attending a few months before your grandchild arrives.
How to Pick the Right One
It comes down to what you actually need. If baby care and safety are your main concerns, the live virtual options from Mayo Clinic, Stanford, or The Womb Room cover that ground well.
Whatever you choose, the fact that you are looking says something important. You already understand that this role is worth showing up for. That is a very good place to start.
