New on HBO Max This Week: Top Movies & Series (Oct 5–11, 2026)

HBO Max

HBO Max adds a short but useful list for October 5 to 11, 2026, and we picked the best of it for viewers 65 and up. Only three real movies arrive this week, so all three are here, along with four relaxed reality series that are easy to watch with a cup of coffee.

Highlights for the Week

What’s the best new movie on HBO Max this week?

For a feel-good night, Crazy Rich Asians (Oct 6) is hard to beat: a big, funny romance with Michelle Yeoh as the mother-in-law from heaven, or the other place. For something more thoughtful, Top of the World (Oct 8) is a 40-minute documentary about the restaurant at the top of the World Trade Center.

Are there any easy, family-friendly series on HBO Max this week?

Sweet Deceit (Oct 6) is a light baking game show with Josh Peck that works well with grandkids. House Hunters International (Oct 9) and Sin City Rehab (Oct 8) are classic HGTV comfort viewing.

Is The Housemaid worth watching?

If you read Freida McFadden’s bestseller, yes, it’s a twisty thriller with Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Just know it’s rated R for violence, sexual content and language.

Top New Movies on HBO Max This Week

Only three new movies arrived on HBO Max this week, so we’re including all three.

Oct 6 – Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Constance Wu plays a New York economics professor who flies to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family and finds out they’re among the richest people in Asia. Henry Golding is the boyfriend and Michelle Yeoh is his very disapproving mother. Jon M. Chu directed.

It’s a classic romantic comedy at heart, with lavish weddings, mouthwatering food scenes and a terrific mahjong showdown. Rated PG-13 for some language and mild innuendo, so it’s fine to watch with teenage grandkids. Runs about two hours.

Oct 8 – Top of the World (2026)

A CNN Films documentary short about Windows on the World, the restaurant on the 106th and 107th floors of the North Tower, from its 1976 opening to September 11. Betsy West and Julie Cohen, who made RBG and Julia, directed it. Chef Michael Lomonaco and food writer Ruth Reichl share memories, and Denis Leary voices founder Joe Baum.

If you ever ate there, or remember when it opened, this will hit home. The film spends most of its time on the cooks, waiters and dishwashers who made the place run, and it honors the 79 employees who died there. It’s only about 40 minutes, but the 9/11 section is emotional, so watch it when you’re in the right frame of mind.

Oct 9 – The Housemaid (2025)

Paul Feig adapts Freida McFadden’s hit novel. Sydney Sweeney plays a young woman with a troubled past who takes a live-in job with a wealthy couple (Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar) and soon realizes their home is full of secrets.

Book club readers will enjoy seeing how the twists play out on screen. It’s an R-rated thriller, though, with violence, sexual content and strong language, so it isn’t one to watch with the family.

Top New TV Series on HBO Max This Week

Oct 5 – Sister Wives (2010)

Season 21 of TLC’s long-running reality series about the Brown family. Kody Brown’s plural marriage has mostly come apart by now, and the show follows the wives as they build separate lives.

Long-time viewers will want to keep up, and the family drama is about as tame as reality TV gets. If you’ve never watched, this is a strange place to start; go back to the early seasons instead.

Oct 6 – Sweet Deceit (2026)

A new Food Network competition hosted by Josh Peck. Teams of three hunt for desserts disguised as everyday objects, hidden in real rooms, and have to guess which things are actually cake. The first episodes have a Halloween theme.

It’s light, silly and completely clean, which makes it a good pick when the grandkids are over. Holiday episodes follow in November.

Oct 8 – Sin City Rehab (2025)

Season 2 of the HGTV series with designer Alison Victoria, who moved from Chicago to Las Vegas to restore mid-century homes. Expect bold, old-Vegas style and a fair amount of renovation stress.

If you like watching tired houses get a second life, this is an easy weekly habit. Nothing here to worry about, and it’s fun to see the old Vegas glamour come back.

Oct 9 – House Hunters International (2006)

A fresh batch of episodes of HGTV’s classic. Each half hour follows a person or couple moving abroad as they tour three homes and pick one.

Comfort TV at its finest. It’s a cheap way to travel, and it’s handy if you’re daydreaming about retiring overseas. Short episodes, no surprises, perfect with lunch.
