HBO Max opened the vault this week. “The Maltese Falcon” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” are two of the finest films ever made, one a sharp detective story with Humphrey Bogart, the other a powerhouse drama with Marlon Brando. Both are a real treat on a quiet night.

Is there something lighter for an easy evening?

Try “Grudge Match,” where Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro play two old boxers coaxed back into the ring for one last bout. It pokes fun at itself, and the two legends clearly had a good time making it.

Any comfortable series to keep on in the background?

Plenty. “Beat Bobby Flay” and “Beachfront Bargain Hunt Renovation” both returned with new seasons, and cooking and home shows like these are perfect for half-watching while you go about your day.

Sep 1 – Grudge Match (2013)

Two retired boxers, played by Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro, spent decades avoiding a rematch until a promoter finally lures them back for one more fight. Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin turn up in support and get some of the best lines.

This is a light, affectionate comedy that gently ribs the boxing movies both stars are famous for. Expect some salty language and a bit of ring action, but nothing hard to stomach. A fun, easygoing choice.

Sep 1 – The Last Samurai (2003)

Tom Cruise plays a weary American soldier hired to help modernize Japan’s army in the 1870s, who is captured and slowly comes to respect the samurai way of life. The scenery is stunning and the story builds to a stirring finish.

It is a sweeping historical epic with a lot of heart. Do note there are several large battle scenes, so it gets bloody in stretches, but the film is thoughtful rather than gratuitous. Best when you are in the mood for something grand.

Sep 1 – The Maltese Falcon (1941)

Humphrey Bogart is private eye Sam Spade, drawn into a hunt for a priceless jeweled statue that has everyone around him lying and scheming. It is widely considered the film that set the template for film noir, and it is endlessly quotable.

The mystery is clever, the dialogue crackles, and there is nothing here that would trouble any viewer. If you have somehow never seen it, this is the week to fix that. A genuine classic in the best sense.

Sep 1 – A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

Vivien Leigh plays a fading Southern belle who moves in with her sister and clashes with her sister’s rough husband, played by a young Marlon Brando in the role that made him a star. It comes from the famous Tennessee Williams play.

This is heavier, more serious drama, and it deals with hardship and cruelty, so it is not a light night’s viewing. But the performances are extraordinary, and for anyone who appreciates great acting it is unforgettable.

Aug 31 – Big Burger Battle: Season 1 (2026)

This Food Network competition gathers cooks to build the best burger they can under pressure, with judges tasting their way to a winner each round. It is straightforward, tasty television, and it will very likely make you hungry.

Cooking contests like this are among the most relaxing things to watch, with no violence and no cliffhangers to worry over. Put it on, enjoy the creations, and root for a favorite. Simple pleasure, start to finish.

Sep 3 – Beat Bobby Flay: Season 43 (2026)

The long-running favorite is back for another season. Talented chefs first face off against each other, and the winner then gets a shot at beating star chef Bobby Flay at a dish of their own choosing. The format never gets old.

This is comfortable, feel-good viewing you can drop into anywhere, since every episode stands on its own. It is friendly competition with a lot of good food, and nothing about it asks much of you. An easy yes.
