What to eat and where to eat.

orange and white plastic pack

There was something special about the snack aisle in the 1990s. The colors were brighter. The flavors were bolder. And every package felt like it was designed to make a kid’s day just a little more exciting.

Many of those snacks eventually disappeared from shelves. But they never really left our memories. One mention of the right name and suddenly you are right back in the school cafeteria, carefully negotiating a trade for someone’s Dunkaroos.

Brands are starting to take notice. Trix Yogurt, Dunkaroos, and Altoids have all made their way back into stores in recent years. That gives plenty of hope for the ones still missing in action.

Here are eight snacks from the ’90s that fans have never stopped talking about, and would love to see return.

1. 3D Doritos

These were not regular chips. 3D Doritos were puffed, crunchy, and airy in a way that felt like something out of a sci-fi movie. Nacho Cheese and Jalapeño Cheddar were the two flavors that became staples of every school lunch. They disappeared in the early 2000s, and fans have been asking for them back ever since.

2. Dunkaroos

Tiny cookies plus sweet frosting in one little tray. That was the genius of Dunkaroos. Some kids dipped carefully. Others loaded every cookie until the frosting threatened to overflow. The kangaroo mascot and birthday cake flavor made it feel like a celebration every single lunch period.

Dunkaroos quietly vanished from American store shelves in the 2010s. The nostalgia around them grew so loud that their return felt almost inevitable, and they did eventually come back, at least for a time.

3. Fruit String Thing

Half snack, half entertainment. Fruit String Thing gave kids colorful strips of fruit candy to peel apart and eat one string at a time. The fun was in the unraveling as much as the eating. Once they disappeared, fans kept bringing them up as one of those snacks no modern version has ever quite replaced.

4. Fruitopia

Fruitopia was more than a fruit drink. It was an experience. The psychedelic commercials, vibrant flavors, and eye-catching vending machines made grabbing a bottle after school feel like a ritual for a lot of kids and teens in the ’90s. The brand slowly faded from most American stores despite its massive popularity during the decade.

5. Butterfinger BB’s

Instead of the classic Butterfinger bar, these came as bite-sized balls packed with that same crunchy peanut butter flavor. They were perfect for movie theaters and road trips. Once they were gone, fans spent years online treating them like a lost treasure from the golden age of ’90s candy.

6. P.B. Crisps

Planters made these small shell-shaped snacks filled with creamy peanut butter, and they were nearly impossible to stop eating. They tasted like a cross between a cookie, a cracker, and a candy bar all at once. The peanut-shaped design made them stand out on the shelf. They still have one of the loudest cult followings among all discontinued snacks online.

7. Philadelphia Cheesecake Snack Bars

These refrigerated cheesecake bars felt a little fancier than your average freezer aisle treat. A creamy cheesecake center with a crunchy coating made them unforgettable. Fans still bring them up in nostalgia conversations today and consider them one of the greatest discontinued desserts of the entire decade.

8. Shark Bites Fruit Snacks

Every bag of Shark Bites came with a challenge: would you find the rare white shark gummy? That single mystery piece turned snack time into a competition in elementary school cafeterias everywhere. The chewy texture and ocean-themed packaging made Shark Bites something more than just fruit snacks. Different versions have appeared over the years, but longtime fans say nothing has matched the original.

What brought all these snacks back into the conversation? Nostalgia, mostly. Social media keeps these memories alive, with fans constantly sharing photos and stories about flavors they miss. Brands are paying attention, and some of these classics have already found their way back to store shelves.

There are still plenty waiting in the wings. If any of these names brought back a memory today, you are definitely not alone.
