3 Nail Shapes That Make Mature Hands Look Elegant

Our hands tell our story. And as we get older, that story gets a little more visible: a few more wrinkles, some loose skin, veins that stand out a bit more. The American Academy of Dermatology Association confirms these changes are completely normal as skin matures.

But here is something fun to know: a simple manicure can go a long way toward making your hands look their most beautiful. The right nail shape alone can make your fingers look longer and more slender.

We turned to Jacqueline Pham, a New York City nail artist and celebrity manicurist whose work has appeared in Vogue and Allure, for her top picks. Her clients include Tiffany Haddish and Nick Jonas, and she knows exactly which shapes do the most for mature hands.

Before we get to the shapes, a quick word on keeping hands looking their best. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery notes that smoking, unprotected sun exposure, and fast weight loss can all speed up visible aging on the hands. Their recommendation: moisturize with a product that contains vitamin C, and apply sunscreen to your hands whenever you head outside.

What Is an “Old Money” Manicure?

You may have heard the phrase “old money” style: it means quiet, understated elegance rather than flashy displays. Applied to nails, it means keeping things natural, clean, and delicate. Soft colors. Simple shapes. No loud designs.

Pham calls this look “quiet luxury,” and it happens to be exactly what flatters mature hands most. Here are her three shape recommendations.

1. Soft Almond

“If your hands have become more delicate over the years, soft almond is one of the most flattering shapes you can choose,” Pham says. A regular almond nail comes to a distinct point. The soft almond version files that tip into something gentler and more rounded.

“This shape naturally elongates the fingers because of the gently tapered shape,” she explains. She describes the result as refined, with that old money aesthetic that works beautifully for mature hands.

To do it yourself at home, use a glass nail file to “file the sides slightly inward and soften the tip into a rounded point,” she advises. Her color pick: a sheer pink, creamy nude, or a classic French manicure.

2. Oval

Oval is a timeless shape that works whether your nails are long or short. “Oval nails visually lengthen the nail bed while keeping the hands looking soft and elegant,” Pham says. “The shape never goes out of style and is true understated elegance, complementing every nail length.”

It is also one of the easier shapes to achieve on your own. Simply “round the tip evenly while keeping the sides slightly tapered,” she says. For color, she suggests soft shades like ballet pink, ivory, or beige to keep it simple and classic.

3. Squoval

Like the idea of a square nail but want something a bit softer? Squoval is your answer. “Squoval nails combine a square shape with softened corners for a clean, polished finish,” Pham explains. “This classic shape gives mature hands a sophisticated appearance without looking trendy.”

Start by filing straight across the nail tip to form a square. Then, using a glass nail file, gently round the corners. Pham’s color suggestions for this shape include ballet slipper, rosy beige, greige, or a glossy nude.

A Little Polish Goes a Long Way

All three of these shapes share something in common. They are soft, elegant, and built around the idea that less really is more. No extreme lengths, no loud colors, just beautiful hands that look like you.

Whether you visit a salon or do your nails at home, these shapes are genuinely achievable. And sometimes a fresh manicure is all it takes to make your hands feel wonderful again.
