If you have ever lived with a dog, you know the look. The one that says something is not right, and you had better come and see.
Late on the night of September 17, a police officer in Leawood, Kansas, was patrolling a residential neighborhood. He spotted a dog standing alone in the middle of the road. Its leash was still attached. No owner was in sight.
The Leawood Police Department has since released footage from the officer’s body camera. Fox News reports that the video shows the dog barking at him. His first answer was the one most of us would give.
“Hi, why don’t you go on back home?” he said.
The dog did head for home. The officer went along. Police say he followed it about half a block, and the video shows him following it up a driveway. A second dog appeared there.
“Is this where you live?” he asked the dogs.
It was. The garage door was open, and the homeowner was on the floor inside, unable to get up. Police said the resident had been there for more than three hours.
“Hi, are you OK?” the officer said.
Medical crews treated the resident at the scene, the local station KCTV5 reports. The department says the resident is now back home and recovering.
“Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed,” the department said.
Neither news report gives the dog’s name, or the names of the owner and the officer. So we are left with the plain facts: a dog that went looking for help, and an officer who was willing to be led. This was enough for the owner to get the help they needed.
It was only half a block. The next time a dog gives you that look, it may be worth the walk.
