Oct 1 – The Boys in the Boat (2023)

George Clooney directs this true story of the University of Washington rowing team, a group of working-class kids who made it to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Callum Turner plays rower Joe Rantz and Joel Edgerton is their coach.

This is about as wholesome as sports movies get, and it’s based on the bestselling book many book clubs read. It’s rated PG-13 but very mild. A good pick to watch with grandchildren who play a sport.

Oct 1 – The Sting (1973)

Paul Newman and Robert Redford play two Depression-era con men who set up an elaborate scheme to swindle a mob boss, played by Robert Shaw. It won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.

If you saw it in theaters, it holds up beautifully, ragtime soundtrack and all. If you’ve never seen it, you’re in for a treat. It’s rated PG and the twists still work.

Oct 2 – Now You See Me: Now You Don’t (2025)

The Four Horsemen magicians are back for another heist, this time chasing a priceless diamond. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher and Morgan Freeman return, joined by Rosamund Pike and a younger crew of new magicians.

It’s a light, flashy caper that doesn’t ask much of you, and Freeman is always good company. It’s PG-13 and fine for teenagers. You don’t need to remember the earlier films to follow it.

Oct 2 – Wuthering Heights (2026)

Emerald Fennell’s new take on the Emily Brontë novel stars Margot Robbie as Catherine and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, with Hong Chau as Nelly. The film sticks with the stormy, doomed romance on the Yorkshire moors.

Fans of the classic book should know this is a bold, modern interpretation, not a faithful costume drama. It’s rated R for sexual content, so it’s one to watch on your own. If you want the gentler version of the story, look for older adaptations instead.

Top New TV Series on Prime Video This Week

Oct 1 – Miss Scarlet (2020)

Kate Phillips plays Eliza Scarlet, who takes over her late father’s detective agency in 1880s London at a time when women weren’t supposed to do that sort of thing. Stuart Martin plays William Wellington, the Scotland Yard inspector who can’t decide if she’s a help or a headache.

This Masterpiece mystery is a real comfort watch: clever cases, sharp banter and a slow-burning friendship. Season 1 is where it all starts. It’s mild enough for most of the family.

Oct 1 – Poldark (2015)

Aidan Turner plays Ross Poldark, a British Army officer who comes home to Cornwall in the 1780s to find his father dead, his mine failing and his sweetheart engaged to his cousin. Eleanor Tomlinson plays Demelza.

If you loved it on PBS, Season 1 is a good excuse to start over. The Cornish cliffs alone are worth it. There’s some romance and a bit of violence, but nothing most viewers will find hard to sit through.
