Oct 1 – Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Constance Wu plays a New York economics professor who flies to Singapore with her boyfriend (Henry Golding) and learns his family is enormously wealthy. Michelle Yeoh plays his disapproving mother.

It’s a fun, old-fashioned romantic comedy with gorgeous food and weddings, and Yeoh is wonderful. Rated PG-13 and easy to share with adult kids or teenage grandkids.

Oct 1 – Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

George Clooney leads a crew of thieves, including Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, in a plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos in one night. Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia co-star, and Carl Reiner and Elliott Gould are a delight as the older con men.

Pure fun with no real violence to speak of. If you like it, the 1960 Rat Pack original and both sequels arrive the same day, which makes for a good weekend.

Oct 1 – The Post (2017)

Steven Spielberg directs the story of the Washington Post’s decision to publish the Pentagon Papers in 1971. Meryl Streep plays publisher Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks plays editor Ben Bradlee.

Many of our readers lived through this, which makes it even more gripping. Streep is quietly brilliant as a woman finding her nerve in a room full of men. It’s PG-13 for language and fine for older teens interested in history.

Oct 1 – The Thin Man Goes Home (1945)

William Powell and Myrna Loy return as Nick and Nora Charles, who visit Nick’s parents in his small hometown and end up solving a murder. Their dog Asta comes along, of course.

The Thin Man films are pure comfort: witty dialogue, a relaxed mystery and one of the best married couples in movie history. Several other Thin Man films arrive too. Great for anyone who loves classic Hollywood.

Oct 1 – War (2026)

This new British legal drama follows two rival London law firms fighting over the messy divorce of a tech mogul and a film star. Dominic West and Sienna Miller lead the cast, with Archie Renaux as an ambitious young lawyer caught in the middle.

If you liked The Crown or Suits, the mix of power, money and courtroom sparring should work for you. Expect some strong language and adult themes; it’s an HBO drama, after all.

Oct 2 – Maine Cabin Masters (2017)

Season 13 of the Magnolia Network favorite. Chase Morrill and his family crew restore old, run-down lake cabins across Maine, often on tight budgets and with plenty of surprises behind the walls.

It’s gentle, good-natured and full of people who clearly like each other. Anyone who has ever owned a lake place or dreamed of one will enjoy it. Totally family friendly.
