Aug 14 – Normal (2026)

This one comes from Derek Kolstad, the writer who created John Wick. Bob Odenkirk plays the mild-mannered interim sheriff of a small town called Normal, Minnesota, and when a bank robbery goes wrong he gets pulled into something far darker than his quiet town would suggest.

It mixes dry humour with real crime-thriller tension, and Odenkirk’s everyman is what holds it together. A good pick if you would rather have a smart, character-driven crime story than a loud blockbuster. Expect some violence that comes with the territory.

Top New TV Series on HBO Max This Week

Aug 16 – Lanterns (Season 1)

This is HBO’s big new DC drama. Two Green Lanterns, the veteran Hal Jordan and the newcomer John Stewart, work as intergalactic lawmen who come down to earth to investigate a murder in the American heartland, one that turns out to have cosmic consequences. People have described it as a grounded, True Detective sort of take on the comic-book world.

It is the most talked-about premiere of the week and a handsome piece of work. Even if superheroes are not usually your thing, the small-town murder mystery makes it far easier to get into than a typical comic-book series.

Aug 12 – Signs of a Psychopath (Season 11)

This long-running true-crime series comes back for an eleventh season, going through the words and behaviour of killers using interviews, interrogation footage, and expert analysis to work out what drives them.

It is plain, case-of-the-week true crime made for people who already love the genre. The subject is dark, as you would expect, so it is one for viewers who know what they are getting into.

Aug 13 – Isadora Moon (Season 1)

Based on Harriet Muncaster’s popular children’s books, this animated series follows Isadora Moon, who is half fairy and half vampire, through gentle little adventures as she works out where she fits in.
